Our conclusion – there’s a lot of development still happening in the field of binaural but it’s an exciting new technology available to us now and it’s only going to get better over time. ![]() Something in the landscape to look at besides snow on the ground and gray skies is a good plan. Containers filled with plants in the landscape in all of the seasons sounds appealing. The article is a very interesting and well written discussion of containers in the garden, and garden containers that will withstand fall and winter weather. There are plenty of details, and lots of curves. This is a very heavy box, supported by very slender legs. The bottom of the leg has a sleeve of thicker and larger steel, for stability. Each leg has several of them welded together, for strength. Steel straps are welded to the bottom of the frame, to hold the steel box that would slip inside the frame. The tops of the tubular steel has small steel shperes welding to them as a finishing touch. The scrolled steel handles and diamonds came next. It takes more time than I ever thought it would to get the size and proportion of a box just where it should be Though Buck does multiple CAD drawings for everything he builds, the finished box tells the tale. Since the original Charisse boxes were made in 2005, changes have been made. It took quite some time just to get the frame together, square and true. Making steel look graceful is not so easy. I was interested in making one box that was a more graceful. Buck’s other boxes have a simple and solid design. The only square stock in the frame is a diamond, welded from curved lengths of steel. Mistakes in the length and angles of a piece, times many pieces, can add up to a box that bears no resemblance to square. Sal, Dan and Buck fabricate for Branch, but these were Buck’s to make.Įach box is assembled from a lot of pieces that need to be cut fairly close to perfect. Welding one section to another requires a lot of cutting and precise fitting. The frame and handles are made of both tubular and solid round lengths of steel. The Charisse box is not so easy to fabricate. Given that lead, that classic material for garden ornament, sculptures and containers has become incredibly costly, steel with a finish that brings the color of lead to mind seemed like a good idea. A container that can withstand any climate or season, from the salt air in Florida to the heat in Texas and the cold in Minnesota, is a container that can provide many years of service. USB 2.0 cables will also work, but they won’t transfer data or charge a device as fast. The same cables will work with both, but when devices with different capabilities are connected, you only get the lowest common data-transfer rate.įor USB-C, cables and connectors marked USB 3.1 or “SS” (for Super Speed) will be the fastest. If there is no Thunderbolt symbol, then it’s a USB-C connector. If you have a Thunderbolt connector - it will have a lightning-bolt symbol above or beside it - then you have Thunderbolt, not plain USB-C. The question above is essentially answered by which type of connector you have. Here’s a nice braided Thunderbolt 4 cable from Satechi, for example. What connectors and cables should you use? Apple makes cables, but you don’t have to buy them. It will count for a lot whenever you’re connecting devices to transfer files, and especially where video is concerned. If you’re building a computer setup, go for Thunderbolt 4 connectivity wherever you can for the fastest and most robust data transfer. Thunderbolt 4 stuck with its predecessor’s maximum data transfer speed of 40Gbit/s - four times faster than USB 3.2 Gen 2 - but it added support for dual 4K displays, security enhancements and Thunderbolt Alternate Mode for USB hubs in addition to daisy chaining. Thunderbolt 3 doubled the capacity of Thunderbolt 2, with four lanes of PCI Express general data and four lanes of DisplayPort video data. Compared to USB-C two-lane road, it’s like a superhighway with more lanes. But Thunderbolt carries more information and goes a lot faster. Using the same connector, USB-C, is what makes Thunderbolt and USB-C look alike. It can also deliver more power, but that isn’t necessary for most charging applications. Thunderbolt is faster than USB-C and clearly the better choice for data transfer. What’s the difference between USB-C and Thunderbolt? Thunderbolt 3 and 4 use the USB-C connector. Thunderbolt 1 and 2 used the Mini DisplayPort connector. It combines PCI Express and DisplayPort signals - data and video - plus power, all in one cable/connector. Thunderbolt, created in 2011 through a collaboration between Intel and Apple and initially called “Light Peak,” adds even more functionality to one cable and connector than USB-C does. Defining Thunderbolt Though the upcoming USB4 2.0 may make up ground, Thunderbolt is the faster and more capable of the two. To confuse things a bit more, USB4 2.0 may come out before the end of 2023 with twice the bandwidth of the current version. In various devices, a USB-C connector can replace (or add to) the functionality of connectors like USB-A, USB-B, HDMI, DisplayPort and 3.5mm audio jacks. USB-C’s current version is USB4, which came out in 2019. It’s becoming the standard for device charging, as Apple bids adieu to Lightning connectors in its devices. ![]() USB-C, finalized in 2014 when the 3.1 specification came out, is an industry-standard, 24-pin connector that transfers both data and power between devices.
